Archive for December, 2011

It’s Christmas break or winter break depending on how people interpret it.  Time to get my reading on.  Fortunately I got a book catalog in and I started picking out books I’d like to read. I then checked to see if the library had them.  Thank goodness for on-line catalogs.  They had a number of them and I compiled a list along with call numbers and location.  Last week I checked out a few and have begun reading.  ‘The absolute Value of Mike’ was one.  It was about a boy with a math/engineering genius dad who wants the math challenged boy to follow in his footsteps.  Sent to the great aunt and uncle to work on an Artesian screw, Mike finds himself involved in the adoption of a Romanian boy.  I liked the humor in it and that the people weren’t all what Mike thought they were.

E-Publishing.  I’ve been thinking about this lately.  Find an agent or publish oneself?  How do you know the story has been edited to perfection.  I mean, I don’t want to send out a story with major boo-boos in it.  I guess one goes over it until one’s eyeballs fall out.  Still, something to think about.

I guess that it’s for now.  I’m at the auto place where they have wi-fi and my car should be ready soon.  Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.

My Blurb Book

Well, I finally did it.  I got my, I mean Pawnee Kitty, got her book uploaded to blurb.com and it’s on order.  It’s going to be really cool to see it in print.  Not that I consider it a ‘real’ book.  To me it’s a project I, I mean Pawnee Kitty, did for my Mom.  It’s something I, she, always wanted to do, create a book from her travels.  The one thing I’m not looking for is finding the boo-boos and I’m sure there’ll be one glaring at me as soon as I open it.

Still, this is a great experience creating one’s own book, doing the writing, putting it together, editing it, and bringing it to the printers.  Now I’m seriously thinking of perhaps doing an e-book and selling it on Amazon.  I still would like to go the publisher route though.  I know my stories are good.  I’m a lousy salesperson.

I put Morocco in the bookstore in blurb only it only pops up when I type Pawnee Kitty’s name.  I’m going to have to research that because I haven’t a clue what I’m doing wrong.  I kept looking at the newly published books trying to get a glimpse of the book and nothing.  That was disappointing.  I have no idea of what I’m doing wrong.  Like I said, I’ll work on that.  I want to be able to type in Morocco and have the book pop up.  There must be a learning curve here.

What’s neat is that I can order a e-book too except it’s only on the iPad and no one in the family has an iPad yet.  My nephew is talking about one.  I’m sure Pawnee Kitty will persuade him to buy it.

So, now it’s waiting time.  It should be in December 27th.  I missed the Christmas deadline, but that’s okay.  I just want it to arrive before my sister goes back home.

My Blurb book

I’ve been working on this project hoping to get it done by Christmas.  If I keep to my goals, it’ll be done.  Now, whether or not it’ll be all correct is another matter.  I have to hope that all my editing has gotten rid of the typos, grammatical errors, and boo-boos.

Last night I inputted all my text and my pictures.  That’s one day ahead of schedule.  My next step is making sure the text is justified and the text boxes are nicely aligned.  I’ve found out that in the page layouts I’ve made that the text and image boxes wander around the page.  It’s not easy getting that back aligned when you’re using a netbook, but it’s doable.

The whole process is giving me a new perspective on publishers and editors.  I’ve been learning along the way as well.  The main thing I’ve learned is to have plenty of time.  Start early.  No wonder it takes so long for a manuscript to get into print.
